Darkness Encoded (Devlog Game Concept Reflection).

Concept Differences | Reflection:

My original concept was an iteration of ‘Learn to Fly’ with a slight twist. I chose a game that somewhat was easy to understand the mechanics and replicable. I was unsure if I chose a game that was something original, I wouldn’t know where to start, what was achievable and how to accurately get the idea out of my head and into a plan. I wanted to draw the art assets and I wanted to continue my graphic design elements from last year, incorporating them as background assets made the game appear the same way as I imagined. I was a bit ambitious with the time I had allocated to this project, I underestimated what was involved with the project and when I didn’t understand something, or it wouldn’t work as intended the research time and testing that was required. I had plans to create so many more upgrades and integration of multipliers, but I didn’t grasp the length in time was spent on just making the core aspects of the game.

I am happy with the look of the game and the feel as I believe I have made a solid foundation of a game to build upon. I enjoyed the process of the game and I think it could be fun with more upgrades and more choice. In the making phase I constantly got fixated in making the small components of the game appealing and satisfactory to my grand plan, that I forgot what makes a unique and enjoyable. Yes, the small animations are very cool and are important to a final product, but I feel as if I had my time again, I would focus on the core components that create the function of the game.

As this was my first project I constantly got snagged on little errors, these would halt my progression and motivation to tackle the larger projects with fear of failure. In my mind and in my initial devlog I wanted to create something that felt complete and to a standard I was proud of. I didn’t want to present something that didn’t reflect my idea and my learning journey, although all the work might not be shown the foundation skills required is what will further allow me to develop this concept into its final form.
